Emergencies – Keep Your Home Safe From Gas Leaks
If you smell gas in your home, you may have a gas leak. Here’s what to do:
- Don't light matches or cigarettes, or any form of flame or spark. Stop using electrical switches, appliances and your mobile phone. Never light a gas appliance if you can smell gas.
- Turn off all of your gas appliances. Check that the pilot light (the small flame that lights the main gas burner, mainly in hot water systems) has gone out.
- Open all windows and doors to disperse the gas. You should not attempt to relight a gas appliance if you can still smell gas.
- If all of your appliances are switched off and you think gas is still escaping, turn off the main gas supply tap at your gas meter and call 13 13 52.
In most cases, turning the main gas supply tap lever to a horizontal position, or the wheel in a clockwise direction, will turn it off. It's very important to turn off the
main gas supply tap in these circumstances as some appliances have a pilot light.
A note for our Albany customers - Alinta supplies reticulated LP Gas in Albany. If you’re one of our Albany customers and can smell gas in your home,
try to ventilate confined spaces, basements, and other low lying locations where pockets of gas may collect before you re-light any gas appliances. LP Gas accumulates at
ground level because it is heavier than air.
Damage to
If you are responsible for the damage to the gas main or service, you may incur the repair costs. Alinta Gas Networks are only responsible for the meter and the gas pipes
coming into the meter. Gas leaks after the meter are the customers responsibility. You can either contact Alinta Assist on 13 13 58,
or you can choose your own licensed gasfitter.
